Great end to the discussion with Robert Bohl. I’ll admit to never cracking open one of his games, but he convinced me that he is extremely interesting and smart. I think we definitely need to pressure him on the Werewolf game so it becomes a reality. I also loved the various dimension of finding ways games can change the world. Usually, when people say “change the world” it sounds so large that you either aim too high or give up. You broke down the issue into some very practical steps. From charity, to education, to making daily “to dos” more fun, games can impact our lives and make moment’s better, and it all adds up. A random thought hit me, in that the to do list game ap seems somewhere to fit in on a continuum from the field worlk song, or sea shanty to our life with the smart phone. Maybe I am mixing things, but, generally work songs existed to help organize and make more bearable hard and/or repetative work (I am hearing some lace making and rope twisting songs made popular in the celtic folk tradition in the back of my mind as I write). I’m not sure of the history of organizing games to make similar contributions to focus and passing time with work, but they may be out there. However, the shift from collective songs to individual games might be worth thinking about. Is there a social shift, from collective work to competative (commercial?) living represented? Am I just crazy and full of poo? Hard to know, but you might run across something that would give hints, so I spout off and hope someone else explores the topic. Thanks for sharing this discussion, it was really thought provoking.
